How You Can Correct A Damaged Passport

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

The passport is a primary requirement when you want to travel to other countries. When it gets damaged, it may not be acceptable. The best action to do when you think you have a damaged USA Passport is to have it replaced. The steps in replacing this document are very similar to a first time application. Yes, you still have to pay for renewing your travel document, but it is a much cheaper option than having your ticket cancelled because of invalid papers.

Form DS-11

Replacing a passport requires the same set of documents and needs your personal appearance in an acceptance center. Fill out Form DS-11, which is the official passport application. Go to the nearest acceptance center and submit Form DS-11. This form cannot be mailed. You cannot request somebody else to submit the same for you. You have to do it yourself.

Birth Certificate

The birth certificate is also required for replacing a damaged passport. Chances are you already have a copy of this important document. However, recent applications require that the full names of both parents must be indicated in your birth certificate. Not having this requirement could be a painful hassle. A strategy to defeat this probable obstacle, in the unlikely event that you need to get a replacement, is to check your certificate now and determine if all required information are present and are accurate. If not, you need to have them corrected.

Application Form

After inspection of your application form, you will be told to pay for the processing fee. When this happens, it means that your application is valid. Your next step is to wait for the process to finish and then your new papers will be mailed to you.

Valid Documents

There is an average of four to six weeks wait for a replacing a damaged passport. If you do not like to wait this long, apply for a replacement the moment you notice any doubtful changes that makes you think it has become invalid. What makes this document invalid is something that is left to the discretion of the official who will examine your papers. That is why the most prudent course of action is to get a new one right away so that you will save time.

Expedited Passport

You may also apply for an expedited application. This requires a awaiting time of three weeks. However, you have to pay extra cost for this option.

Tracking System

You can also find out the state of your application online. This online tracking system informs you how soon you will be able to receive your papers. Just provide your last name, the last four characters of your social security number, and your date of birth.

Immediate Action

A damaged U.S. passport is one of those problems that you have to solve right away. The easiest way of resolving this problem is immediate action with the United States passport application. The cost of a new set of documents is very small compared to the inconvenience of cancelling your travel because your papers were found to be invalid. If you’re worried about getting passport pages added, there’s a different form for that.

The Various Colors Of Passports And How To Decode Them

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Passports have been around for a very long time, helping people travel all over the world and see different sorts of places and meet all different types of people. However, not a lot of knowledge is common concerning passports, and some people only see it as a document that allows you to get from point A to point B. There are a lot of intricacies when it comes to passports, such as when it comes to a mutilated passport, and one thing that many people aren’t aware of is the various coloration associated with passports.

Passports come in many different colors. These colors aren’t all for looks, they actually serve a purpose. Each color shows the status of the person traveling. For example, you probably own the dark blue passport. These are the passports issued to regular citizens. For citizens above the age of 18, these passports are valid for 10 years, for those under this age, it’s valid for 5 years. Another type of passport is the one with the maroon cover. These passports are reserved for citizens on official US government business, but not diplomatic business. These passports are generally held by congressmen, US military, family of military, or anyone else assigned on official business. These passports are valid for five years.

For those traveling for strictly diplomatic purposes, the black passport is used. This passport alerts officials that the person holding is has diplomatic immunity. That is, he is free of search of person and luggage, he can’t be arrested, and he doesn’t need to worry about delays or detentions. These passports are valid for five years as well.

There is also a green colored passport. This passport is different in that it says nothing about the holder. It was simply created by the State Department in order to celebrate the 200th year anniversary of the U.S. Consular Service, and it featured a portrait and commemoration of Benjamin Franklin on the inside. These passports stopped being issued in 1994, and so it is not likely that you will see anyone using a green passport anymore.

The final color for passports is blue-green. These passports generally are held by those who are not full citizens of the United States. For example, the Travel Document, also called the Refugee Travel Document or Refugee Passport, is issued to aliens who are refugees or asylees. A refugee is someone who fears going back to their country because of any sort of persecution. An asylee is someone who is unwilling or even unable to return to his or her country for various reasons. Another blue-green passport is the Reentry Permit, which is given to a permanent resident alien, so they can re-enter the country. This is just a little bit of knowledge concerning passports, and there certainly is much more to learn, such as how to get a passport name change.
